Do Italians Really Make Better Gelato?

Since its creation Italian gelato has been synonymous with quality.
But with so many companies making machines are the Italians still the kings of gelato?

Why The Reputation?

Ice cream and gelato were essentially created at the same time. Ice cream is different from gelato because of the amount of milk fat and air put into the tasty treat. Gelato is a lot denser and some would argue more flavorful because of its incorporation of fruit and pulp.

Ice cream was made to be more palatable to the English royalty while the Italians thought Ice cream was a diluted version of their culinary masterpiece.

For 400 years Italians perfected their recipes, working tirelessly to make the best gelato possible. Then in the 1960’s commercialization of the Italian frozen treat ramped up in the western world. Gelaterias popped up everywhere in Italy because unlike Ice Cream, Gelato has a 3 day refrigeration period, max.

Italian gelato makers were the first to discover how to engineer a machine that would churn out quality gelato in half or even a third of the time. As technology progressed machines got better and cheaper to make.  Thus the gelato boom of the 1960’s.

The Competition

With the advent of CNC machining and the manufacturing of parts, companies are able to build, design and produce their own machine, no longer hanging on to the Italians for gelato production.

Finamac, a company founded by a Brazilian aeronautical engineer, has taken machine production to another level above the Italians. Other companies around the world have machines but nothing to the quality standard of Finamac.

Each company has its pros and cons so it's important to do the research when looking for a machine that will be the backbone of your business. Lower price usually means less quality and a tendency to break and need repair. It also means poor customer service and technical advice. Finamac is a great balance of both. Not the cheapest option but for the price the value is obvious.

To Wrap It All Up

While the Italians had the lead in quality and the initial invention of Gelato, the Brazilians are raising the bar in production. Finamac has proven that with great quality machines and fresh ingredients the crown of best gelato maker is up for grabs. No longer is the world of premium gelato an exclusive Italian club.

The future for gelato making is unknown and up for grabs. But quality and care is a  timeless attribute that is acknowledged by a few. Finamac understands this idea and shares the values of making premium products.
